StandOut Photography | Lethbridge & Area Wedding Photography

Your wedding ceremony is the most sacred – and arguably the most important – part of your day. But somehow, scheduling a wedding officiant is often left until last (or even forgotten!) in the chaos that is finding a florist, photographer, venue, and caterer for your wedding.

So we’ve reached out to two of our favourite wedding ceremony officiants for a little bit of guidance on how to choose the one that’s just right for you. Norma and Carol are some of the sweetest ladies in the business – read their helpful insights below!

What qualities should a couple look for in a potential wedding officiant?

Norma Gibbon: It’s important to find someone who meshes with your personality. Are you looking for something a little different, or do you just want a basic civil ceremony? There are only two things that we need to include in each wedding – the legal declaration, and the vows. But outside of that, we can make it as personal and memorable as you’d like.

Your wedding day is one of the biggest days in your life – and your ceremony should feel special, no matter what. Finding someone that will craft a ceremony around your wishes will take your wedding above and beyond.

Carol Beswick: The officiant of your ceremony sets the tone for your wedding, so it’s important to find someone who’s a good fit for you personally. If you feel comfortable with the person who’s marrying you, it will make ALL the difference in your wedding ceremony.

How far ahead should a couple book a wedding officiant?

Norma Gibbon: Well, before you send your wedding invitations out for sure! It depends on what you’re looking for – newer appointees will be less busy, but those that have been in the business for more than a couple of years book up about six months in advance. Book early if you can!

Carol Beswick: Further than you think! We have a lot of weddings scheduled throughout the course of a year, so if you are looking for a specific date and time, contact an officiant to book as soon as you can.

If you could offer one piece of advice to couples looking for a wedding officiant, what would it be?

Norma Gibbon: The most important thing is to find someone who’s a great fit for you – and if you’re not sure, interview them all!

Carol Beswick: A great place to start looking for an officiant is thorugh referrals. Word of mouth is still one of the best ways you can find the perfect person to marry you and your future spouse!

What is the best place for potential clients to find you online?

Since we’re appointed by the government, we’re actually not allowed to advertise. But you can find a full list of Southern Alberta Wedding Officiants right here. Facebook groups and pages are also great places to find recommendations!

There is SO much to think about when you’re planning a wedding, but choosing the wedding officiant that is perfect for you is so important. We hope that you find these tips helpful as you’re planning your wedding ceremony!
